Wings (1927) is a silent movie that tells us the story of two hunter pilots who serve in World War I. The pilots hold Hershey chocolates in their hands throughout the movie. Congratulations Hershey! You have successfully demonstrated how effective brand (product) placement can be in the movies.
9. Hawai 5-0
This is one of the worst examples of a placement that a brand can execute through an agreement with the producer. An overweight man on the beach eats a Subway sandwich and talks about how tasty it is. It is hard to call this brand placement, it’s as if they set up a promotional display stand on the show which makes it more of an advertisement.
8. Power Rangers
In the new ‘’Power Rangers’’ movie, all the actors moves and even dialogues are centered around the Krispy Kreme brand. The movie shows almost every single character going to a Krispy Kreme and speak happily about the brand. Even the villains go to a Krispy Kreme and eat donuts in the midst of the battle.
7. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Our ninja turtles used to love eating Domino’s, but in the latest movies they seem to prefer Pizza Hut. Yes, Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo and Michelangelo love pizza but that they show us the brand every time they eat pizza makes this a glaring example of brand placement.
6. Little Nicky
Little Nicky, Adam Sandler’s character in the movie is one of Satan’s sons. One could excuse him saying “Popeye’s Chicken is fucking awesome!” because he likes fire and therefore fried food, but that would definitely be stretching it. Things get even weirder when Sandler’s character casts a spell on the Devil’s followers and doom them to Popeye’s.
5. You’ve Got Mail
In this classic movie with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, both actors go to Starbucks for their morning routines. Hanks ignores the Starbucks barista who energetically wishes him a good day. Ryan’s character is visibly happy to walk into Starbucks and order coffee. The barista tells her that they have free cookies, and everyone leaves the place happy.
4. Transformers Age of Extinction
The Transformers cartoon had one goal: toy sales. Time has shown that the mentality of the brand has not changed. A rich businessman is after the alloy called Transformium, which can turn into anything that a person imagines it to be. So what does the rich, powerful businessman turn this Transformium into? Beats…
3. The Internship
The two salesmen played by Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn start their internship at Google. Naturally the entire movie focuses on Google’s culture, brand and products. The audience ends up watching a two-hour advertisement for Google instead of brand placement.
2. Mac and Me
The movie was supposed to be inspired by Steven Spielberg’s science-fiction stories. However, as one can tell from the title, its content turned into a 4-minute ad spot. There is even a scene where kids dance happily at a McDonalds and the McDonalds logo is constantly visible in the background.
1. Paranormal Activity 4
We have all heard of Paranormal Activity to an extent. In Paranormal Activity 4, Xbox Kinect is shown as a device that autonomously records everything that happens in a room at night. Do you think that helped Xbox Kinect sales or rather hurt it because of the creepy atmosphere it contributes to?
